Las Vegas, New Mexico, is about 60 miles east of Santa Fe, along Interstate highway 25. It is an under appreciated gem and a far cry from the Southwestern chic of nearby Santa Fe, with a large collection of historic Victorian homes. Las Vegas was an important waypoint on the Santa Fe Trail, and later on the railroad across the Southwest. There are over 900 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the central area of town, it seems almost every single building you see is significant in some way. Experience the quant and charming shops within the Plaza, Douglas/6th Street, and Railroad Historic Districts. These areas provide many small home-town shops, antiques, book stores, and coffee shops.

United World College

The Armand Hammer United World College is one of nine colleges under the International Board of the United World Colleges, whose central office is in London. -The school, in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, is located in the town of Montezuma, New Mexico, just northwest of the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico. - UWC was founded in 1962 with the vision of bringing together young people whose experience was of the political conflict of the cold war era, offering an educational experience based on shared learning, collaboration and understanding so that the students would act as champions of peace. -It is a two-year, independent, co-educational boarding school with about 228 students representing 70-80 countries at any time. -Students graduate with the International Baccalaureate Diploma, one of the most respected secondary diplomas in the world. -In 2007, the Wall Street Journal identified UWC-USA as one of the worlds top 20 schools for its success in preparing students to enter top American universities. - UWC makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

Hot Springs

Montezuma Hot Springs, located five miles northwest of Las Vegas. The setting is fantastic, as the springs lie along the Gallinas River adjacent to several historic buildings. A collection of hot springs bubbling out of the side of a hill, feeding a variety of rock and cement tubs. Originally used by the historic Montezuma Castle Resort, the springs are now accessible to the public. A collection of three groupings of hot springs has been diverted into rather rustic cement and rock pools and tubs along the side of the road in the small community of Montezuma.

Montezuma Castle

The largest and one of the most historic structures in Las Vegas New Mexico is the old Montezuma Castle, just a few miles north of the plaza area. The building is also referred to as the Montezuma Hotel. The site where this magnificent hotel was built in itself comes with a lot of history. If you drive north on Hot Springs Blvd. in Las Vegas, five miles to Montezuma, a tiny village at the base of the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the imposing view of the Montezuma Castle set up on the hill above the town looms ahead. After being vacant for ten years, Montezumas Castle was bought by Armand Hammer for use as a United World College. Armand Hammer restored the old Montezuma Hotel building.
